Free Parking for Detroit City Workers

City workers that work in the downtown area have always had to pay for parking. Downtown workers have had the disadvantage of taking a cut in wages to pay parking fees. With all the downtown development, finding parking at affordable rates has become next to impossible. We cannot keep up with the increasing parking fees! The only free parking available, the Mud Lot, was sold to private business interests in 1999. The lot started charging city workers this past August. Although there are many city-owned parking lots, city workers do not receive any discount or preference.
The City of Detroit needs to address this very important problem because it is only going to worsen. We need FREE parking! The City could utilize its current structures or build bigger ones and make them free to City workers. The City could provide a parking allowance (like tool and uniform) or parking reimbursement (like mileage). It is truly insulting that the bosses that get paid the most can park for free while the struggling workers get stuck with the bill.
Detroit city workers insist that the Kilpatrick administration address the worsening parking dilemma. City workers deserve free parking!
