It is an old Gladstone tradition for grade 12 students to be allowed to have their lockers together in the Grad Hallway. Students cope with any less-than-ideal locker spots they receive in grades 8 through 11 with the understanding that come grade 12 they will be allowed to choose a locker from anywhere in the Grad Hallway and be next to their friends in the prime locker location.
The loss of this tradition is a heart-breaking blow to the students of Gladstone Secondary.
We have been told many reasons for the ending of this tradition: this year's grade 12s were too noisy and they disrupted classes; the grade 8s are afraid to walk down the hallway; it had been planned to happen for a while now and we had supposedly been informed before.
We disagree with these reasons and we think that there will be no positive outcome from spreading the grade 12s throughout the school.
We know of and understand the plan of the administration to set aside groups of 25 lockers all over the school specifically for grads, but we do not think this is a satisfactory compromise.
Grade 12s should be allowed certain privileges and having their lockers together in the Grad Hall is one of them. We want to continue this Gladstone tradition.
