Harmonization of Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety and Environmental Standards With Those of The United States

I hereby petition the Government of Canada to amend all legislation and regulations that affect Canadian motor vehicle environmental and safety standards so as to harmonize such standards with those of the United States of America. The difference between Canadian and American motor vehicle standards is a major reason why Canadians pay more for motor vehicles than Americans.
The higher prices result in Canadians being less able to afford newer safer, more fuel efficient vehicles.
The current legislation and regulations results in Canadians paying substantially more than Americans for motor vehicles. It is estimated that, in 2007, Canadians paid approximately $5.7 Billion more than Americans for essentially the same motor vehicles. Estimates of the surcharge paid by Canadians for motor vehicles are as follows: Honda Civic - 13\% to 25\%; Chevrolet Impala 14\% to 25\%; Ford Mustang from 19\% to 31\%. The Canadian Government presently allowing motor vehicle manufacturers to determine which vehicles meet Canadian motor vehicle standards creates an effective barrier to trade which results in higher motor vehicle prices to Canadians.
If Canadian standards were fully harmonized with those of the United States, the result is that Canadians would be more able to purchase vehicles from the United States at lower prices which would put downward pressure on Canadian motor vehicle prices.
Please announce when Canadians may expect harmonization to occur to enable Canadians to afford newer safer and more fuel efficient motor vehicles.
