Honor the NAACP Boycott Petition : ACSP

Carolina and take every possible measure to move the conference to a
different location. In a dispute about the South Carolina legislatures
unwillingness to abandon flying the Confederate flag, the South Carolina
state chapter and the national NAACP have called for a boycott of
conferences in that state. We believe, as planners, in accord with our
ethical principles, we should oppose racism and all its manifestations,
and we believe those principles are involved here. We regret the
difficulties our position causes our colleagues at Clemson and in the
ACSP, and realize it will have costs, and hope we can have our
conference there immediately after the lifting of the boycott. In the
meantime, we cannot in good conscience attend a conference in South
Carolina.

Some of the undersigned have additional suggestions for how we might
alternatively proceed, and some would like to set forth their reasoning
for their position in greater detail, and will communicate directly with
you on such further thoughts. Almost everyone we have talked to has
expressed regret and even awkwardness at taking positions at variance
with those of very respected colleagues and friends, and hope that they
will take our positions as respectful disagreement among friends, better
expressed and in the open than festering to cause unexplored problems in
the future.
