A Russian-made jetliner carrying 168 people nose-dived into a field after taking off from the Iranian capital on Wednesday July 16th in a fiery crash that shredded the aircraft and killed everyone aboard. Another plane skid off the runway on July 24th killing 17 people. According to reports from Iranian news agencies, 17 planes have crashed over the past 25 years, killing approximately 1,500 people.
The US imposed sanction in 1995 bans aviation companies from selling aircraft and repair parts to Iranian airlines. The U.S. has barred aircraft manufacturer Boeing from selling passenger aircrafts to Iranian aviation companies. The International Civil Aviation Organization warned that U.S. sanctions against Iran were placing civilian lives in danger by denying Iranian aviation necessary spare parts for aircraft repair.
As you are well aware, the people of Iran are in the midst of an unprecedented struggle for freedom. Many have lost their lives or are imprisoned and tortured without charge. While there are plenty of ways targeted sanctions can be placed against officials of the unelected Iranian government, I am sure you will agree that any broad economic sanctions that put the ordinary and freedom loving people of Iran at risk are not morally or strategically justified.
It has been 30 years since Iran and US severed relationships. The lifetime of most passenger aircrafts in Iran has expired and passenger airliners cannot repair their old planes or buy new ones. This puts the lives of countless Iranians at risk.
As the leader of the free world, we ask that you consider lifting sanctions against selling passenger airplanes and parts to Iran so the people of Iran can enjoy the same freedom and peace of mind that Americans take for granted when flying. We encourage you to instead impose sanctions against individuals and organizations of the Iranian government that perpetrate violence. We believe this to be in the best interest of the United States by maximizing leverage and good will while reducing collateral damage. You will have the gratitude of the Iranian people.
