A culture of respect and responsibility.
Many communities. One family. One Mizzou.
We are staff members of the University of Missouri.
Disturbed by high-profile race-related crimes that have taken place on campus, we feel compelled to take action to fight racism and any behavior that is intolerant of human difference, whether these differences involve race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity or expression, language, disability, age, sexual orientation, or any other identity characteristics.
As staff members, we have an opportunity to serve as role models and mentors, both on campus and in the community. By committing to the One Mizzou culture, we support the effort of the University community in taking action against prejudice and all other dehumanizing conduct. We also believe that by learning about and understanding our differences, we will assist in helping all to achieve success and make MU a better campus for each and every one of us.
We support the efforts of students, faculty, administrators, and community members to create a culture of respect and responsibility at the University of Missouri. We support efforts to broaden understanding of our differences, which will help our students succeed and make our campus and community a better place for all.
We therefore commit to take as many of the following actions as possible as first steps in an ongoing effort to nurture and protect a culture where diversity is celebrated, honored, and protectedand we invite all our fellow staff members to join us in this movement:
1. Whenever possible, attend and participate in events that promote unity such as the One Mizzou launch event on April 7, 2011, at 1 p.m. in front of the Student Center on Rollins Ave.
2. Create a safe space in our facilities, classrooms, departments, and colleges for students from all backgrounds to express their views respectfully in order to foster a safe and positive learning environment.
3. Seek out professional development programming that will enhance our ability to understand and respond effectively to the human differences that enrich Mizzou and our community.
4. Seek consultation and assistance in addressing problematic issues that occur in our presence.
As a member of this movement, I will promote a welcoming, inclusive, and equitable campus culture.
