PETITION FOR THE UoA ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN

We the undersigned (Students and Staff of the University of Auckland) petition the Student Life Commission, the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar to accept and implement the recommendations of the Draft Environment Taskforce Report; Section 3.3.7, dated 30th August 2003, in its entirety. Within the implementation of these we call for: (1) adequate funding and resources be allocated to the staff member(s) and the committee, and that; (2) on-going operational support and regard be shown to the proposals that will follow from the implementation of these recommendations. The Recommendations are printed below:


The Recommendations of the Draft Environment Taskforce Report; Section 3.3.7, dated 30th August 2003, are:

1. That the University moves to implement its environmental management plan and strategies developed a few years ago, as soon as is viable.
2. As part of this implementation, establish a dedicated senior staff position and committee to oversee the management plan; and initiate and implement ongoing environmental management systems. All of these are recommended in the university's environmental policy.
3. Model the environmental management system on that used by the leading Australian universities, especially those involved in ACTS, using the UNSW as a benchmark.
4. Adopt initiatives to deal with the specific areas that could relatively easily be improved at the University of Auckland. These should include, but not be limited to those initiatives listed above.
5. That the University consider becoming a member of the Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future.
6. That the University of Auckland considers becoming a signatory to the Talloires Declaration of 1992, enhancing its commitment to sustainability and environmental management.
