PETITION TO FIND AN ALTERNATIVE TO STYROFOAM AND OTHER HARMFUL DISPOSABLES IN SANTA FE SCHOOL CAFETERIAS

Americans throw away 1,369 tons of styrofoam products every day. Literally billions of Styrofoam products fill our landfills every year. In Santa Fe our schools are adding thousands of Styrofoam trays and other harmful disposable foodware items to our local landfill annually causing serious environmental pollution.
1) Styrofoam does not decompose for tens of thousands of years
In 500 years, it is unlikely any of us will be around...so the trays we used for lunch shouldn't be either. We have to think of future generations.
2) Styrofoam pollutes our land and water and hurts wildlife
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),"styrofoam and plastic disposable materials can have serious impacts on human health, wildlife, and the aquatic environment" because the product breaks down into small pieces and can clog waterways, or be mistaken for food by wildlife;
3) Styrofoam is bad for our health
Styrofoam has styrene, a known hazardous substance suspected to be a carcinogen and neurotoxin that can leach into our food.
4) AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVES EXIST.
It doesnt make sense to trash the environment just to save a few bucks. But given that our schools are hurting for money its important to seek out affordable alternatives and many DO exist - we have choices we need to exercise them.
We the undersigned students, staff, teachers, and parents of Santa Fe schools call for the elimination of Styrofoam in our school cafeterias and for the exploration of environmentally-friendly & affordable alternatives to all harmful disposable food-ware products.
