South Carolina must take a proactive position to support our educational system during this economic crisis. Schools throughout the state are forced to operate in substandard conditions. The following issues must be addressed:
Students who attend schools such as J.V. Martin Junior High School built in 1896 along the I-95 corridor are exposed to classrooms containing mold, collapsed ceilings, no heat or air conditioning, and sewage back up in the hallways on rainy days.
South Carolina schools are forced to deny contracts to qualified teachers for the upcoming school year which will increase class sizes and limit interaction between teachers and students.
South Carolina colleges and universities are decreasing financial aid awards to its students.
Public schools, colleges and other state programs have taken big hits as plunging revenues prompted $1 billion to be cut from spending since July. Advocates for these agencies say the money is needed right away.
The federal government is offering over $200 million in stimulus money to provide South Carolina schools with funds to help minimize the strain of recession.
I am a concerned parent/teacher/student/citizen, and I want all children in South Carolina to take pleasure in their rights to learn in safe and comfortable facilities.
I am signing this online petition to ask Governor Mark Sanford to accept the stimulus money offered by the federal government to make South Carolinas schools safer, to continue to employ qualified teachers, to continue essential after school programs, and to invest in the future of our children and state.
