Save the Westergard Library

We petition the Mayor and Council Members to continue current funding levels to the Johanna W. Westergard library, allowing the library to remain open.
Closing the Westergard library would mean loss of easy library access for patrons in the New Market and Arbor areas. Local teens and children will no longer have access to programs the Westergard library offers. Fewer computers and free Internet access will limit local job searchers in their efforts to find employment, obtain training, and in building resumes and cover letters.
Local groups and programs would be forced to find other meeting rooms and would compete for limited space at the Kennedy Library in Piscataway.
The township's budget for the library in fiscal year 2007 - 2008 resulted in library closures on Sundays and completely eliminated the bookmobile service. Funds available for youth programs, for the purchase of books, videos, CDs and DVDs were cut in half.
The coming fiscal year (2009 - 2010, beginning July 1, 2009) has reduced the library budget by $300,000.
If the Township reduces the Library to minimum funding in the 09-10 Fiscal Year and cuts the Library budget by an approximate $300,000 dollars, this would, no doubt also affect Piscataway's ranking as one of Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live."
We urge you to preserve the high standing of Piscataway Township by supporting the maintenance of the Johanna W. Westergard Library.
