Scrap 'Project Headroom' - Stop the Redundancies and Education Cuts at the University of Salford, UK
Sign Now
The plan to cut 150 frontline staff, with the aim of creating financial headroom for investment, will immediately damage the quality of education in Salford.
Investments the University management is making do not create courses, improve opportunities or benefit the students. Remaining staff will have an increased workload, making it far harder to provide students with the highest standards of teaching, research expertise and pastoral care. The Information and Learning Services stands to lose over 10\% of its Staff - this at a time of increasing need for technical and online support in education!
Head of Finance Simon Attwell states that there is no alternative other than to cut jobs: we have evidence of numerous other ways savings could be made. For example, millions could be saved by abolishing the top-heavy faculty system. Furthermore, is it right that you, Vice Chancellor, continue to enjoy a rent-free house in a very expensive part of Cheshire, and a chauffeur-driven car, while university staff are being made redundant at a time of global crisis?
We demand that spending be directed for the benefit of the whole university rather than on management extravagance and speculation.
We call on you to retract the decision to close the BA (Hons) Traditional Chinese Medicine. Closure will mean the end of a prestigious, accredited course and an end of the popular clinic used and highly valued by staff, students and the public. There has been no consultation whatsoever on this.
The way in which the consultation process has been conducted does not constitute meaningful discussion and indeed has been insulting to staff, who care very much about the future of the University and the quality of the education offered. During the consultation process, Union representatives had to ask time and again for detailed figures, while constructive suggestions have been dismissed out of hand. The Students Union has not been consulted at all.
In short, the crassly-named Project Headroom is a disaster. We call on you to halt this damaging programme of cuts and to begin a new process of meaningful consultation about the future of our University. Our education, the future of Salford University and the future of Salford people are all at stake.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
