WANDHAMA MASSACRE - THE FORGOTTEN CARNAGE

Frantic efforts, calls, compulsions at the hands of J&K state govt. mixed with sops and packages are being announced to lure Kashmiri Pandits back to the valley. Considering the fact that it is an election year it isnt entirely unexpected. The Prime Minister recently announced Rs 1600 crore package to enable Pandits to return to their homeland.

On one hand, the government as well as the separatists are projecting to the whole world that they want to restore Kashmiriyat by bringing Pandits back to the valley while on the other there have been all but one conviction in the cases related to killings, kidnappings and other crimes against the Pandits. All the local militants who have been charge sheeted for killings of Pandits have been released on bail. What can stop a criminal from committing crime again if he is let off like this? Are we welcomed for slow cyanide after fighting the odds for 18 long years and trying to stabilize our lives?

Strange as it may seem no one has even been arrested for the seven massacres of the Kashmiri Pandits. What however is truly bizarre is the fact that the Local Police have closed the Wandhama Massacre case citing un-traceability of the killers as the reason for closing the case.

Wandhama massacre refers to the murder of 23 Kashmiri Hindus in the town of Wandhama on the intervening night of 25th January 1998.It was one of the worst incidences of violence against Kashmiri Pandits being carried out by militants in Kashmir. It was an illustration of the Kashmiri militant's policy of ethnic cleansing . The victims, all of them Kashmiri Pandits, included four children, nine women and 10 men.

The case is in a way a microcosm of the apathy of the Government towards the Pandits and the atrocities on Kashmiri Pandits by terrorists. Ideally the government should have asked a better investigating agency like a SIT/CID or even a CBI to pursue the case so that the killers could be identified and nabbed, had its own Police proved incompetent to do the job. But that was not to be. As always, the Police simply closed the case and thought its responsibility is over.

Does administration care for human lives anymore?

It is thus, us, the citizens of this nation, who have to ensure that justice is meted to the perpetrators of this heinous crime. It is also important to the let this nation and the world know about this incident and how local government and Police have in a way been complicit in the crime by not doing enough to bring the terrorists to the book.

We all appeal to government of India to look into the massacre details carefully & let the justice be melted out.
