Petition to support speed tables
on 2nd Ave. N.E., Tuscaloosa, Alabama
We the undersigned property owners, residents and tenants in the area of and near to 2nd Avenue N.E. between Rice Valley Road and Woodridge subdivision support traffic calming measures, specifically two speed tables, on 2nd Avenue N.E.
We agree that we want the City of Tuscaloosa to take measures to keep 2nd Ave. N.E. safe for pedestrians and children. We believe the speed tables are appropriate in that:
A study by the City of Tuscaloosa shows that 60.6 percent of the drivers exceed the speed limit.
Fifteen percent of the drivers exceed 43.8 mph in the 25 mph zone.
The Office of the City Engineer offers the guideline that if the number of drivers speeding exceeds 40 percent there should be traffic-calming measures. The Office of the City Engineer described the level on 2nd Ave. N.E. as unacceptable.
2nd Ave. N.E. is highly residential so raising the speed limit is inappropriate.
In a case where the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit is this high, targeted enforcement by police is not deemed an effective traffic-controlling measure.
The straight design of 2nd Ave. N.E. is conducive to drivers speeding because there are no natural deterrents, such as curves in the road.
The Office of the City Engineer has included this avenue in his recommendations to the mayor for two speed tables. We support that recommendation.
