A Demand For Tuna Without Mercury

Fishing practices where an unnecessary risk is posed on dolphins, wales, and other marine life should not be tolerated. The mercury levels of imported tuna have been a major problem for not only our food distributions, but also for the wildlife inhabiting those very same waters. Such risks are certainly unthinkable and demand tighter restrictions to be enforced on fishing methods. Historical events from the past pave the means for us to take action today in an industrious world where ignorance cannot be afforded.

Did you know from 1932 to 1968 methyl mercury was released into the sea around the city of Minamata in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan? The toxin bioaccumulated in fish, which when eaten by the local population caused the largest case of mercury poisoning ever. Sadly, it caused the deaths of over 1,000 people and the disabling of many more. It is always helpful to know, and to let members of Congress know, what issues the nation as a whole feel are important. But knowing is only the first step. We must take up responsibility, make it our duty to make others aware of the health hazards in everyday things such as the mercury content in commercially sold tuna.

This petition is to help enforce the encouragement of the U.S. House of Representatives to consider legislation relating to tuna mercury testing and/or fishing practices. The times we live in today demand not only evidence of the crime, but proof in the idea that others do actually care about it. That is why I ask all others in creating this petition to show U.S. House of Representatives that we, the American people, are serious about this issue. Everyone is please asked to sign this petition in evidence of your support and demand for tuna without a side of mercury.
