A petition to demand the revocation of the experimental nightime closure of The Strand by Derby City Council

Derby City Council in conjunction with Derbyshire Police have brought in an experimental closure of The Strand in Derby between the hours of midnight and 5am on Friday and Saturday nights. They claim that this is because motor vehicles pose a danger to the crowds of revellers on The Strand, Victoria Street and Warwick who may be injured crossing these streets.
We believe this is completely unnecessary for the following reasons:
1. The junction of The Strand, St. James Street, Victoria Street and Wardwick is controlled by traffic lights and has pedestrian crossings.
2. There have been no fatalities at this junction or on the Streets involved
3. The volume of people on The Strand is negligible. (
4. Any risk is a matter to be dealt with by policing not road closures
5. The road closure causes inconvenience to businesses, notably Baked on The Strand who work at night and need vehicle access.
6. Taxis, buses and police vehicles are permitted to use Victoria Street and Wardwick - nullifying the whole road closure
7. If people are too drunk to cross a road safely then they are drunk and disorderley and should be arrested.
8. Drunks should not come before hard working local businesses
9. As the picture shows, at 3.30am on a typical Saturday morning the streets are empty
We demand that Derby City Council revoke this ill conceived road closure
