Academic Integrity at Emory University

We, the undersigned members of the Emory University community, respect President Carters right to speak at Emory on February 22, 2007 at the invitation of the University, but we disagree with the format of the talk, the exclusion of alternative viewpoints, the lack of transparency in the selection of questions to pose to President Carter, and the lack of respect this event shows for the principles of academic integrity, open and honest intellectual discourse, and courageous inquiry on which Emory prides itself.
We expect the university to meet its own standards for academic integrity by doing the following:
1) Invite a speaker with highly regarded credentials who can present an alternative perspective on the Arab-Israeli conflict to speak at Emory University on the evening of February 22, 2007.
2) Add increased transparency to the question selection process by:
a. Appointing students who represent different viewpoints on the issue to the question selection committee
b. Publicly posting all questions submitted to the committee in their original format
3) The question selection committee appoints three students to each ask one of the pre-screened questions to President Carter along with one follow-up question.
To meet these expectations would further Emorys mission to be recognized as an inquiry-driven, ethically engaged, and diverse community.
