Alumni for Socially Conscious Finances at Northwestern

Northwestern University's tremendous wealth means that financial decisions have a huge impact on a wide variety of social issues. Schools such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Columbia have standing committees which involve students and faculty in addressing the social responsibility of their schools investments. The Northwestern community, however, has no such avenue to monitor the Universitys $4 billion endowment or to promote financial decisions that could have a positive social impact.

In order to change this, Students for Economic Justice has proposed the creation of a Socially Conscious Finances Committee (SCFC). The SCFC would be a permanent advisory committee that would address the connections between social issues and university investment and spending.

I strongly encourage you to support the creation of a standing Socially Conscious Finances Committee which includes Northwestern students and faculty. I think it is vital for Northwestern to carefully consider how its investments impact issues of social justice in the global community. All members of the Northwestern community, including individuals such as myself, deserve an outlet to voice our concerns. I believe a standing committee is necessary to efficiently and thoroughly address the scope of Northwesterns financial decisions.

I am proud to be a Northwestern alumni, and I sincerely hope Northwesterns actions on this issue will reflect its commitment to the well-being of the wider community. I urge you to do everything in your power to help create a standing Socially Conscious Finances Committee.
