Background
The Minister for Education and Science issued a circular (0044/2007) in July 2007 that would end total early immersion in Ireland by forcing Irish-medium schools to teach English in the second term of the junior infants.
Total Early Immersion:
A system in which the teaching of English, in Ireland, is postponed for up to 2 years until the children have enough Irish to do their school work and interact with others. There is evidence both nationally and internationally that proves that children who go through the immersion education system perform extremely well academically and attain a high standard in both English and Irish.
We the undersigned demand that,
(a) the circular be withdrawn immediately, and
(b) all the recommendations proposed by the NCCA in relation to this matter are adopted; i.e. that research is carried out in Ireland on the relevant questions about language and literacy in Irish-medium schools.
