Your Excellency,
Burma, now known as Myanmar, was at one time one of the most prosperous countries in South East Asia. Due to the lack of good leadership, and the absence of knowledge of the military rulers for structuring Burmas social and economic order, Burma has gradually declined in its economic condition to the point that it is now one of the poorest countries in the world. The crumbling of the state economy, economic isolation, the failure to provide basic fundamental needs for the citizens, and along with the tyrannical ruling have led to much civil unrest constantly all over the country for more than forty five years. Burma remains one of the most repressive countries in the world.
The request by the Burmese people is simple and plain: to provide food, shelter and decent clothing and peaceful living for its citizens. In response to this humble request by the people, as the world has seen, several thousands of innocent citizens have been brutally beaten, arrested, tortured and killed by the ruthless Burmese military junta over the years. Out of much civil unrest since the military coup in 1962 including the nationwide demonstrations in August 1988, the Burmese military junta has killed thousands of innocent demonstrators. In the recent uprising, several hundreds of helpless Burmese people including the venerated Buddhist monks peacefully demonstrating for economic and social reform are being cruelly beaten, tortured and eventually thousands will be executed again. This ongoing relentless brutal suppression and mass slaughter of innocent citizens can only be stopped by strong international intervention.
The United Nations has presented on several occasions to the Security Council resolutions to end the violent suppression of Burmas citizens and to restore democratic ruling. Burma's situation was referred to the UN Security Council for the first time in December 2005 for an informal consultation. China and Russia vetoed the latest attempt by the UN Security Council in January of 2007 to pass a resolution on Burma. With the political support of China and Russia, this military regime has become increasingly intransigent, especially protected by neighboring China from international intervention in return for exhausting Burmas natural resources for Chinas rising economy. It is very likely that the Chinese government will veto again the next UN Security Council resolution on Burma unless all participating countries of the United Nations bring pressure to bear by threatening to boycott the next Summer Olympics to be held in China in 2008.
Once in every four years participant countries enjoy the competition and take pride in representing their countries. At the same time, every day, every month, every year, thousands of innocent Burmese people have been , jailed, brutally tortured, and eventually executed because of the existence of the military rulers who are strongly supported and defended by China. It is quite unfair to ignore such atrocities and to gladly join in the China 2008 Olympics. Kindly consider to boycott the upcoming 2008 China Olympics.
We are at the mercy of United Nations member countries to prevent the Burmese people from being tortured and slaughtered again, to bring back democracy and the welfare of its people. Thank you for your kind help.
