Application to BMC for removal of stray dogs in Mumbai

The number of stray dogs in Mumbai have been increasing at an alarming rate. About 5 years back, there were about 5 stray dogs in every colony. This number has increased to about 25 per colony!





These stray dogs have been the prime cause of concern for people riding motorbikes and scooters during night hours (after 12am). These stray dogs chase bikes for no apparent reason, and in many cases, cause severe injury to the riders either by dog bites or by leading them to fatal accidents.





The last we heard, there were about 3000 pending cases registered with the BMC regarding fatal accidents caused due to stray dogs. The BMC takes absolutely no means to control and eradicate them. City streets are not the natural habitats of dogs. They run in packs of 2-5 and put every human in jeopardy. There have been incidents where people have been bitten so severely by dogs, that it has taken months for them to recover from their injuries.





We urge the BMC and the relevant authorities to take immediate action against this nuisance. The dogs need to be relocated. Merely sterelizing them does not prevent them from biting us or chasing our vehicles. They still are a threat.
