Australia is not dubbed The Lucky Country for no reason. Here in Australia, we are more fortunate in many regards than most other countries of the world. It is for this reason that we believe that our nation Australia has a moral obligation to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
Australia is one of 191 member states of the United Nations which have pledged to achieve the 8 Millennium Development Goals (http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/) by the year 2015. Australia also committed itself to giving its agreed share of 0.7% of our Gross National Income in foreign aid. We pledged to reach this target by 2015. Yet we are not on track to achieving these goals.
Over 1 billion people live on less than $1 a day
Globally, there are 33.2 million people infected with HIV.
Every day, 30,000 children die as a result of extreme poverty.
We wish to bring to your attention these issues and request that you acknowledge that Australia can and must do more
We request that you as Prime Minister of Australia formulate a long-term plan for increasing foreign aid to 0.7%, and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
