Forty-eight Bahraini doctors and nurses were arrested during the recent disturbances in that country. At least twenty of them are still in prison. It has been reported that they are being subjected to torture.
Arresting healthcare staff during conflict crosses every fundamental humanitarian and ethical principle of medicine and cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.
We call for the immediate release of all of these healthcare staff and the upholding of the fundamental principle that medical staff are allowed to treat victims of violence and war unhindered and that hospitals are places of neutrality.
