Bet Does Not Represent Me Petition

Dear Ms. Lee

We implore BET to become socially responsible in their programming choices. We ask that you choose media displaying African Americans in a multi-dimensional manner appropriate to what our culture truly stands for. Leaders such as Rev. Dr. King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and the A&T Four have sacrificed the unimaginable to allow African Americans to enjoy the freedoms that exist today. BET, the largest media outlet for African Americans (via Television or Internet) repeatedly chooses programming that portrays African Americans as pimps, gangsters, whores and sexual objects, ready for the nation to view. For many, it is difficult to fathom that African American leaders gave their lives in hopes of enhancing society when now this race is being portrayed as one that feeds mainly into the barbaric desires of lower human nature. Programming such as music videos, College Hill, American Gangster and many more that undoubtedly target the minds of impressionable youth adversely effect the African American community. Despite the fact that BET has the power and the privilege to shape African American culture, it chooses to show the majority of African Americans as being unmannerly, unruly and dйclassй. Please Ms. Lee this image is tarnishing the way America views African Americans by shaping the views of the African-American community in a distorted fashion. Help us reclaim our name and show the world what our culture truly stands for.
