Cancer Cure over Cancer Research

I am writing this petition letter to voice my opinion about the way funds are being distributed in regards to Cancer.

I believe way too much time and money is being spent on research into cancer.

We know what may cause cancer even though we cannot find out beyond reasonable doubt either way.

So far we have blamed chemicals in cigarettes, amalgam, aromatic amines, chromium, car emissions, mobile phones and many more things and still no rock solid proof can be found on anything, except the fact we all have cancer in our bodies and we need something to begin its process.

What I wish to know is how many more wasted years and money is going to be given to researchers and grant recipients to keep digging for more evidence so we can blame something else.

So much has been wasted when the money and the time of these people could have been spent better trying to find a cure, I do believe in the research and the importance it has in the fight against this parasite, but I think the process is dilatory and the evidence is in the amount of time being spent trying to blame cigarettes over the last 15 years.

I don't think some of the money given to research is used aptly enough and my meaning behind this is, of the $35 million that the Australian Government will be giving to cancer research a portion is to be given to a Doctor to do research on how to make people feel better within themselves after being told that they have cancer.

There are already many support groups and councillors for this practice and you can trust me when I tell you that no matter how much of these worthwhile therapies we may attend nothing can take away the constant thought of "am I going to wake up in the morning"?

A portion will also go toward clinical trials, this is a service to test how new drugs work at trying to retard the growth, not to kill it, only to slow it down.

Research is necessary, but not as a primary concern, yet we persist in doing it in silly circumstances.

The British Government recently spent 3 million pounds to try and prove that if a woman lays on her back with a fluorescent light on it may increase her chance of breast cancer that money would have served better trying to kill the cancer.

A study was done and a book was also written called 'TIS THE SEASON
Publication Date: Nov/Dec 95

Summary: Reports on the outcome of a research on birth defects among babies born in different seasons of the year. Months with high incidence of autistic babies delivered; Factors causing defects including biological and environmental conditions.

This study and its out come took 12 months and here is a list of what their research concluded.

Human nature for some reason needs to know and it has made us too inquisitive for our own good and this unwavering need to know the intricacies such as why and how is bordering on insipid, because if you ask a cancer patient which is more important they will tell you every time a cure first and the why and how as a secondary concern.

We want it out of us and after awhile we don't really care about the why and how.

Research is to blame and I believe enough time has been spent on it.

Some companies have changed their attitude over the years from blame (research to why) to cure (how can we fix it) with astounding results and I will display this in the next paragraph by using Australia Post as an example, so you can validate my information, although my figures may not be spot on they are in the around-about side of things.

In pre 1988 Australia Post was running regular monetary losses of around $50 million a year.

In 1998-9 they decided to change the way the approached things, they went with the cure not blame theory and within two years they managed to turn everything around and not just financially but throughput and better working staff and less union disputes.

Australia Post pay their own staff, have their own vehicles, supply uniforms, pay normal business tax and are fully self sufficient, although they still have to answer to the Communications Minister.

In 1991 they made a profit of around $250 million dollars and I do believe they also gave the government a bit of a bonus payment of about $150 million, because of an attitude change they made a very profitable turn-around.

I am originally a country boy and when the farmers found a fox or dog attacking their sheep or cattle they didn't sit around scratching their heads wasting time or money trying to figure out why or how, they got out a rifle and then shot the animal responsible.

I know my analogy is different from cancer research, but the crux of the story is the same and I know cancers are different, but only in location basically.

Here's hoping that you understand what I am trying to convey to you and may you sit down and think hard about tipping the scales of distribution the other way around, cure first and research second.

I would very much like to hear back from you in regards to this matter and hopefully when you get some spare time I could talk to you about it more you can contact me at [email protected]

Yours Sincerely

Kevin Duncan
