Change Catholic Policy on Condoms

Studies have shown that the correct use of condoms reduces the chance of infection by more than 98 percent. Yet the Roman Catholic Church, one of the fastest growing religions in Africa, continues to advocate the policy that the use of condoms is a sin. Catholic teaching argues that condoms are immoral because they are a barrier to the possibility of life. In the context of the AIDS crisis, however, it must be recognized that the ban on condoms is allowing this deadly disease to spread more rapidly. It is projected that by 2010, 40 million children in Africa could be orphaned due to AIDS.
We, the undersigned members of the Catholic religion, feel that the existing policy regarding condoms is irresponsible and wrong. By signing this petition, we wish to show the Vatican that we want this policy changed. Some of us feel so strongly that we pledge to stop receiving Communion until the use of condoms is permitted. We have indicated this choice next to our names. We believe that protecting lives and families is far more important than the support of a doctrine that does not reflect the reality of our present situation, and we hope the Catholic Church will recognize this as well.
