Change the Name of Legal Holiday from Columbus Day to Indigenous People Day

1. Christopher Columbus was the leader of a genocide of thousands and perhaps millions of Taino people during his voyages to Hispanola.
2. According to his own journal, Columbus admits to killing, torturing, and mistreating this group of indigenous people.
3. According to Columbus, the Taino people were peaceful, generous, and non-warring people, yet he enslaved them for his own gain.
4. Columbus did not "discover" our country.
For the above reasons, we believe that Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a national holiday that allows our government, our banks, our post office, and many schools to close in his honor.
Therefore, we believe that all indigenous people deserve to be honored with a national holiday.
