Changing Boston University's Guest Policy

It is with great opposition to the Visitor/Overnight Guest Policy that we the proud students of Boston University request that a number of significant changes be made. While we are certain that the Guest Policy aims to create an environment that is reasonable for the purpose of studying, we are also certain that it wasnt composed to inhibit our social and emotional well-being. Here is a brief list of the reasons we are strongly against the current Guest Policy:

1. Safety The Guest Policy currently mentions nothing of the word safety or any of its synonyms. This miniscule omission suggests an array of concerns that stem from do they assume the word policy automatically insinuates safety to maybe they only care about us studying and making good grades to ensure we come back and pay the $40,000.00+ dollars next school year. It is more than important to mention safety somewhere in the policy.

2. Study Extension This is by far an inconvenience for residents and visitors. The study extension as it exists now is only being used for everything other than extended study. It would serve a better purpose as a document that is used to control visitation during periods of intense studying (i.e. finals and mid-terms), when it is understandable to enforce a strict visitation policy. As far as people being loud and unruly during odd hours of the night, there are already dormitory regulations that control this situation. Therefore, study extensions are merely unwarranted.

3. Co-hosting Co-hosting is another major inconvenience that is being enforced with good intention. The problem with co-hosting is that it doesnt serve a purpose. People should be wholly responsible for their own guests, and it is no secret that co-hosts never get to see the person being co-hosted because theyre always with the hostas it should be. There are records that show that there is a guest, and there are roommates that can vouch for any wrongful activities that may occur. MOreover, the guests usually have some sort of relationship (i.e. family, friend, spouse, etc.), which makes it even more unnecessary.

These are only a few of the many concerns that we have regarding the Guest Policy. This petition serves as a nexus between the students of Boston University and its administration. It is being presented with maturity and out of respect for the University and its administration. We only hope and ask that the same respect will be shown to us the proud students of Boston University.
