Djinn Buckingham is a 12 year old Polk Township, Pennsylvania child accused of setting a fire that resulted in the death of his cousin. Since his arrest, Djinn Buckingham has been imprisoned in adult facilities with serious adult offenders. It is morally reprehensible that this child is being prosecuted as an adult at all, but that he should be held prisoner in a facility with no protocol for handling child prisoner's is nothing less than state sanctioned child abuse.
Djinns current state of incarceration is unacceptable. He should be immediately transferred to a juvenile facility where he will receive counseling. Media reports describe a horrible home life for this child. Clearly, Djinn is a victim of child abuse and needs immediate professional intervention. Prosecuting children as adults and subjecting them to adult penalties is wrong. Our justice system has been built on the principle that the accused are "innocent until proven guilty", this child has not been found guilty of any crime. He has only been accused.
This case needs to be handled in juvenile court where Djinn will be under the care of trained child specialists, instead of locked in an adult jail cell for 23 hours per day. The juvenile system will focus on his mental and emotional health and create a plan for ensuring that he grows to adulthood with minimal additional damage inflicted by the system. Instead, he is locked in a facility not designed for children his age, but for Adults!
Children are children and do not turn into adults overnight. Caging a 12 year old with adult criminals is wrong and Pennsylvania needs to stop this abuse and injustice immediately.
