Clean up Roanoke City Jail

My name is Teresa Hiner, my son Christopher Cole has been in Roanoke City Jail for 15 months. I have heard stories from him and other present and former inmates about how dirty the place is and how very bad the food is. One former inmate told me when she worked in the kitchen, she was told to make 5 lbs of hamburger stretch far enough to feed everyone, by adding flower and water and making it into a rue. She also told me of how the coolers that hold the juice is full of mold and mildew, I told my son not to drink it, he said, he already knew. She also was having problems with her eyes because, when she was washing out the coolers with bleach the water splashed into her eyes, sometimes she would come to visitation and her eyes would be swollen almost shut and this was months later. I have heard of the guards leaving the inmates trays outside of the pod for over an hour before giving them the slop they call food. The cleanliness of the place is not questionable, it is evident, the place is filthy ! When you walk in the door , you can smell it, look at the floors and walls you can see it ! In visitation, I have taken the mouthpiece off of the phone and it is black and gummy looking. I know that this is "jail" and these are "inmates" and they shouldn't be allowed any "luxuries" but, "cleanliness" and "decent food" are not luxuries, they are necessities ! I firmly believe that if any one of our government officials had a loved one on the inside, things would be different ! Why should our loved ones live in filthy conditions just because they are in jail ? I don't think any one of these officials would eat or sleep in a place like that, but they expect the inmates to live in it. My son was put in an isolation cell that had feces smeared on the wall and it was left there for 5 days before they brought him a mop and bucket to clean off something that should not have been there in the first place ! I was told by a gentleman at visitation on Sunday that they put his son in isolation for MRCA, he didn't have MRCA, I think they do that just to be vindictive and punish them for some odd reason. My son has been in isolation for a week, he doesn't have scabies, he has had an allergic reaction to either the soap or the wool blanket but, since I have been writing letters and complaining, they had to find some way to punish him to get back at me. Is this how our judicial system is suppose to be run ? Someone really needs to look into the people or person running the place ! Someone needs to take a good long look at Octavia Johnson, my animals have a cleaner bed to sleep in and better food to eat than these inmates do ! I don't know if this will do any good but it sure can't hurt, I'm hoping that my son doesn't suffer anymore repercussions because of my trying to take a stand ! If you think inmates shouldn't live in filth and should have edible food to eat then please sign this.
Thank you,
Teresa Hiner
