We the undersigned are asking you the advertisers to amend your contracts with TV/Cable executives to include closed captioning on your promotional commericals or/and other televised programs that you may sponsor and the outcomes which may ensue.
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing community relies on closed captioning to follow the dialogue in any commerical or program. If you have ever tried watching such a video with the sound off, you realize that it is impossible to fully understand what is going on when you can not hear what is spoken. These deaf/hard of hearing people are your potential consumers and Im sure you, the advertisers, would want them to have full access to your promotional commericals or/and other televised programs that you may sponsor.
Whenever the closed captioning is turned off or not created (intentionally or unintentionally), please understand that a significant number of potential customers/viewers are then excluded. When those incidents occur, we believe that a portion of advertising revenues should be refunded to the advertisers.
More and more businesses are being viewed as engaged in corporate social responsibility. We hope that this petition will also result in an examination of business ethics among cable/TV executives.
Closed captioning is good business and promotes access for many.
