Demand an Environmental Assessment of the Port Lands Energy Centre

To: The Legislative Assembly of Ontario
Whereas the Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) is a massive 550-megawatt natural gas-fired electrical generating plant that the Government of Ontario plans to build on Torontos waterfront at a projected cost of $700 million

Whereas gas plants emit nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide into the air, producing smog, acid rain and chlorinated water that will be released back into the lake

Whereas the plant is being built without a full environment assessment being conducted, against the advice of experts including Torontos own Chief Medical Officer of Health.
Whereas plans are underway to construct a natural gas pipeline in the Portlands to service the PEC
Whereas Enbridge Gas has hired a consultant to conduct an Environmental Report of this 'Portlands Reinforcement Project', running from Hearn Generating station to 405 Eastern Avenue

Whereas an Environmental Report (ER)is different from an Environmental Assessment (EA) in that an EA is conducted independently and fully assesses environmental impact

WE THE UNDERSIGNED PETITION THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ONTARIO TO:
1. Immediately conduct an Environmental Assessment on the Natural Gas Reinforcement Project as well as on Portland Energy Centre
2. We also call on the Government to heed the concerns of the Community and to find Environmentally safe and responsible measures to resolve the energy issues of the City and Province
