We, the undersigned, express our concern for the suspension of the SOAS cleaner and UNISON rep Lenin Escudero, who has been suspended from his job as a cleaner at SOAS for now three and a half weeks after refusing to obey to his manager’s request to carry out extra work on top of his normal duties on an unpaid basis. In addition to that, the work he was asked to carry out, was not in his job description. Lenin is being subject to a disciplinary procedure that might result in his dismissal simply for refusing to take on duties not specified in his job description. While Lenin’s job description specifies that he may be required to fulfill these duties on a temporary basis, he is not required to perform them on a long term basis and is therefore within his right to refuse to perform unreasonable managerial instructions.
Lenin’s suspension is not only a symptom of the unreasonable conditions of work to which the cleaners at SOAS are subjected - expected to carry out extra duties without reasonable compensation and punished for speaking out against this - but also amounts to outright victimisation of a prominent trade union activist, who has been at the centre of the UNISON campaign for fair conditions for the SOAS cleaners. We believe that such top-down, intimidating and disproportionate managerial behaviour should have no place at SOAS.
As students and members of staff of the SOAS community, we demand that Lenin Escudero is immediately reinstated to his position and that SOAS management intervenes to make sure that Lenin suffers no further victimisation at the hands of ISS management
