Dear Mr. Rumsfeld,
We the undersigned respectfully ask you to put an end to the arbitrary detention of over 600 prisoners being held for over an year at the American Military Base in Guantanamo Bay, including Omar Khadr*, a 16 year old Canadian. Since no person should be illegally detained, these detainees have been deprived of all their internationally recognized legal rights.
We therefore demand :
That the legal status of these prisoners be clarified immediately in front of a judicial authority and:
- those who are not being recognized as prisoners of war, should either be charged for a crime if any and be tried in a fair and public trial, or they should be released immediately.
- those who are being recognized as prisoners of war, according to Geneva Convention, should immediately be repatriated to their respective countries (since the conflict in Afghanistan is now over). Unless they are to be charged for a recognizable offence, their fundamental rights should not be violated.
