Intro
Depleted Uranium (DU) is the bi-product of natural uranium, that has been used up. This product is radioactive. The government was originally throwing it away until they realize how strong it was. DU is 1.7 times denser than lead. Its ability to pierce through amours and tanks make it highly valued by the army in the Gulf War, and todays Iraqi war.
Throughout the war, our army has been using and dumping this product all over Iraq. Used in munitions, this product has become highly used and abused in the cities of Iraq. People in Iraq are being affected by this disaster. Children are developing leukemia and malformations at birth. Adults are developing lung cancer. Veterans have become ill. But theres a problem. The pentagon is denying all of this, they say their studies show DU is not the cause. That there is not enough evidence to support this theory. But the veterans point out that absence of evidence is not the same thing as evidence of absence. The pentagon has ignored organized and further studies.
Cause
My cause is clean up the cities of Iraq properly. It is our own fault that we have inflicted this tragedy on the citizens there, we are destroying the future of Iraq. Depleted Uranium has a radioactive half life of 4,500,000,000 years, so its not going to disappear anytime soon. Of course, I as a student cannot simply go to Iraq and clean up this waste. It will take time. DU is just and important as the war, if not more. Leukemia rates have increased by 600\% and the chances of malformations at birth have multiplied 6 times. DU is used on the tips of bullets to pierce through almost anything. When it has been used, it erupts into a burning cloud of vapor and particles that can be inhaled and infect the bloodstream. The bigger particles that are inhaled cannot be broken down by the lungs and remain there. This causes cancer. And due to its radioactivity, people are at an even higher risk.
My cause is too inform all the representatives in America to sign the H.R. 2410 The Depleted Uranium Munitions Study Act.
