DHA needs a policy to allow au pairs and live in carers

Defence families struggle day to day with easy options for childcare. Often working mothers are forced to leave jobs as they can not find suitable care whilst husbands are deployed or on exercise as child care centres don't open early enough or close late enough. Often defence personel are posted away from family and friends and therefore there is no support network or people that can help out with child care outside regular working hours. Currently Defence Housing Australia have no policy allowing a person that isn't a dependant to live in a defence house for longer than 28 days. This means that an au pair can not stay in a defence house. A few offices have allowed this previously but as there is a staff changeover it is becoming harder and harder to get an au pair or live in carer approved. They are requesting letters from bosses etc that approve them as dependants (not possible) or advise some to kick them out or they will be forced to pay market rent on the properties. In many cases DHA are confused as some families have been allowed and some families have not. When you ring DHA and ask them what needs to be done to get approval the answer changes with every person that answers the phone. DHA needs to get a policy written to approve these carers Australia wide and not have defence families miss out on such a valuable resource.
