Factory farms should be opened up to the public for educational tours, and not be hidden from view. Schools should be required, as part of their Social Studies curriculum, to have their classes visit web sites, which depict in correct fashion the factory farming of animals for human consumption (to include the dairy industry, fur and leather industry, egg production industry, veal, chicken, pork, lamb and beef industries, etc.) via web cams (with sound) positioned in factory farms and slaughterhouses. Also, children should be exposed to the animal experimentation and research efforts by our fine universities and research facilities. They should see what must occur in order for science to advance for their physical benefit. If computers are unavailable, field trips and a first-hand view of the activities surrounding animal production will be sufficient.
The consumption of animals as a normal routine should not be forced on any child. Children should know that what they are happily and ignorantly consuming was born of fear and suffering. Education is the key to making wise life decisions.
If parents believe that it is too graphic for their children to watch their food being manufactured as part of their educational experience, then, in turn, I believe they should rethink the manner in which they perceive animals and their (man-made) role on this earth. Freedom and dignity for ALL living beings!
