We, the undersigned, demand an apology from First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, husband of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, for vilifying the lesbian and gay community. In his response to allegations that the family of President Macapagal-Arroyo is receiving money from jueteng, a form of illegal gambling, he said that only cowards and gays destroy peoples reputation through lies and intrigues. We believe that homophobic statements coming public officials and personalities contribute to the hatred that the LGBT community experiences. We affirm lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride and we believe that sexual orientation or gender identity is not a basis to discredit or malign anyone.
We also urge the Macapagal-Arroyo government to initiate moves to penalize the vilification of homosexuals and to contribute in the efforts to eliminate discrimination and abuse on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
