Since Mr. Huggins past legal troubles, he has handled himself with utmost professionalism. He has also made great strides in rectifying past image problems that his basketball teams may have caused the university. Even recently, Mr. Huggins, along with Mr. Bob Goin, have shown a zero tolerance policy when dealing with legal troubles of the members of the basketball team. A look at basketball programs of similar size and stature in the NCAA shows that these problems at not unique to the University of Cincinnati.
Also, under Mr. Huggins, graduation rates and overall academic performance have increased. I have no doubt that this is also due to many unsung, hardworking people within the athletic department. However, if Mr. Huggins is going to take the criticism for poor performance, as he has in the past, he also deserves credit when his players achieve.
University President Nancy Zimphers handling of this situation has led the University of Cincinnati to be ridiculed in the national media. While she was fully aware of her intentions in the contract process, she allowed Mr. Huggins to make empty promises to future basketball recruits. Ms. Zimphers actions in this matter display a lack of integrity and show that she is out of touch with the members of the university community.
I ask you, the Board of Trustees, to examine Ms. Zimphers performance in both this situation and her actions, or lack thereof, while president of the University of Cincinnati. If you find her performance to be unsatisfactory, as many in the university community do, I ask you tom immediately remove her from her position as president of the University of Cincinnati.
I would also like to set forth, that until Ms. Zimpher is removed, I will no longer support the University of Cincinnati or any organization that in turn supports the university, and will encourage others to do the same.
