We note that there are already hundreds of Fairtrade status organisations across the UK. Glasgow is a fair trade status city, with a fair trade status university, and including dozens of fair trade status schools, churches, and workplaces.
Furthermore, Scotland's first minister Jack McConnell announced in August 2006 that Scotland is drawing up criteria to aim to become the first fair trade nation. See: http://www.scotland.gov.uk/News/Releases/2006/07/03112221
We believe that Celtic has a crucial role to play in this movement. We are a club with a unique history, founded on "being to alleviate poverty" (meeting of constitution, St Mary's, Calton, November 6, 1887). We have a proud record of social responsibility, including the social charter, the Celtic charity fund, and innovative projects such as the new venture to improve the eating habits of local children. Supporting Fair Trade is a natural step for the club to take. It will benefit Celtic - in terms of finance and image. It will benefit the fair trade movement, by raising its sales and profile. And it will benefit thousands of the world's poorest farmers. There is no reason not to go for it.
We urge you to take steps to seek fair trade status for Celtic FC. We would be really, really proud, were Celtic to become the first fair trade football club.
