We the undersigned wish to express our objection to the current begging laws in the State, we believe they constitute a double punishment for the most vulnerable in society.
We believe that the current laws are not dealing with the problem, and do not have the needs of the homeless at heart, but rather the interests of commercial businesses.
We feel that the current laws hide the problem and do not deal with it.
We strongly feel that a more fair solution be found.
We do not believe however that the same rules should apply to "hostile beggars" but rather those who do not intrude on anyone.
In putting your name to this petition you will be agreeing with the above statements.
For those who are not aware, the current begging laws say that one cannot beg in any way outside a business of any kind, which eliminates almost the entirety of the city centre. The only places left are the bridges, yet the Gardaí have been seen moving people from the bridges, using substantial force.
