Subject: Every citizen of India should have food security as a legal entitlement.
Respected Sir/Maam,
Recently, reports of huge pilferage in the public food security schemes have resurfaced substantiating the demand for guaranteed access to adequate and nutritious food.
As citizens entitled to the Right to Live with Dignity (Art. 21 of the Constitution), we place our demand for the ZERO HUNGER ACT.
The ZERO HUNGER ACT calls for
- Converting the food security schemes to a legal entitlement.
- Strengthening the monitoring mechanism through the establishment of National and State-level Commissions, constituted by an independent body of academics, policy-experts, representatives of civil societies and rural and agricultural communities, to ensure transparent and efficient operation.
- Establishing a Right to Food Fund for meeting the expenses.
- Revamping of the present laws to make any violation of this entitlement a criminal offence.
- Specially constituted Food Courts where all related offences will be tried.
We the undersigned support the ZERO HUNGER ACT Campaign initiated by Food for the Hungry Foundation. We demand that this Act be immediately passed to stop the gross violation of a persons Right to Live with Dignity. We will not cease to continue campaigning and demanding until you recognize your duty towards the citizens of India.
