We, the undersigned, want it to be known that citizen Paul Copeland deserves to be cleared of all charges held against him.
Given that Austin's 'sanctuary city' policy does not allow for law enforcement to request a person's immigration status, it is unreasonable to hold Mr. Copelanda private gun-selleraccountable for government ineptitude. Leonel Huerta Sr., the purchaser, presented a valid Texas driver's license and since the sale in question was a private one, no background check was required. Had the license expired along with the immigration visa, the purchaser would not have been able to enter the building; much less, purchase the firearm. This case is the byproduct of failed immigration policy and Paul Copeland acted in accordance with the law.
Therefore, we the undersigned petition Judge Sam Sparks to clear Paul Copeland of all legal charges held against him.
