After the 2009 Iranian presidential elections, many were arrested. Now it has been more than a year since the elections and many are still waiting to be charged and prosecuted. These so-called political prisoners are innocent people who simply protested peacefully the outcome of the election. Many who protested on the streets thought that the result was pure forgery.
Prisoners, who are considered as political prisoners, are treated inhumanely and are often tortured. They receive harsh sentences such as capital punishment, or life time imprisonment. Then they are transferred to far away prisons that prohibit family visits.
These so-called political prisoners are in fact students, or activists who support childrens, womens, or workers rights, or are lawyers who simply were representing their clients.
We who are residents of different countries, through this signed petition ask the UN commission for Human Rights to order the Iranian government to respect human rights . We ask for the release of all political prisoners who were arrested in connection with the presidential election, as they are innocent of any wrongdoing. We also request the immediate release of arrested students, including Majid Tavakkoli, Mahdie Golroo, Majid Darri and Kouhyar Goodarzi.
