Freedom and Justice for Tamil in Srilanka

Dear Mr. Kofi Annan,

No task is more fundamental to the UN than the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict. Kofi Annan, 21 March 2006.

This week, on 14 August 2006, the Sri Lankan Army under the directions from His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka sent Kfir jets which dropped sixteen (16) bombs on the Sencholai Orphanage run by the LTTE. As a result of this deliberate targeting by the Sri Lankan Government, sixty-one (61) schoolgirls were killed and more than one hundred girls were injured.

I plead with you, Sir, there should not be any further senseless and cold-bloodedness killings in Sri Lanka. The United Nations can no longer stand on the fringe and look on the carnage as a spectator nor give legitimacy to the Sri Lankan Government by giving her member a permanent voice in the UN Council.

I urge you to:

(i) Send your UN representatives to Sri Lanka so as to prevent and resolve the deadly conflict in Sri Lanka between the Sri Lankan Government and the Tamil people;

(ii) Sanction the Sri Lankan Government for their latest atrocity on the Tamil people using the powers available to the UN.

The ferocity of the 14 August attack indicates that the objective of the Government was to cause maximum possible casualties and the targeting of children demonstrates the intent of the Government was not merely atrocious and inhuman but genocidal. The UN can no longer play blind, dumb and deaf to the long series of atrocities by the Sri Lankan Government. Otherwise, the legitimacy of the UN as a whole is inarguably redundant.

(iii) Offer the LTTE a legitimate representation on the United Nations Council so that the other party to this conflict will be addressed in order for a solution to bear fruit.



The Sencholai Orphanage is a well-known Humanitarian Zone. The Sri Lankan Government has insisted that the Orphanage was a front for LTTE rebels. However, I believe that UNICEF and the Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission (SLMM) officials have visited the Orphanage and have confirmed that all casualties were unarmed and innocent children.

Enclosed is a letter to His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The letter contains the only solution to this conflict. I hope you will forward this letter to His Excellency.

Dear Mr. President,

I appeal to the Leader of the Sinhala People no more blood must fall whether it is of Sinhala or Tamil or child or man or woman or soldiers of either side.

The killings that has happened in the past 2 months is so heart-wrenching I am sure that any loving Sinhala or Tamil parent must be moved to tears and I daresay, Sir, as a parent yourself, your heart cannot be stone when you see innocent children killed.

There is a solution for peace in Sri Lanka (SL). Before that, please picture this - SL holds the World Cricket Series in 2020 in Colombo and beats Australia in the final. With the demise of Bali as the top tourism spot for Westerners, SLs tourism economy is booming as she offers her shores to the millions of beach worshippers. Once again, SL becomes the pearl of the Indian Ocean. Business is booming and growing at an incredible rate. Buildings are sprouting like mushrooms after a rainy day. The ordinary people of SL are going about their daily business, whether work, school or social activities and facing their own individual issues health, wealth, family or friendship issues.

Now, let me bring you to Malaysia Malaya gained her independence from the British in August 1957 and now, nearly 50 years later, as a result of her own peoples endeavours, it is now a powerhouse, albeit a compact one. In 1965, Singapore was born. Lee Kuan Yew pushed for a separate state and the Father of Malaya, Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR) agreed he said you go your way and we will go our way. Singapore is bustling and Malaysia is flourishing. There will always be issues within each country but the overriding factor is there is peace and stability in that region. As a result, both Malaysians and Singaporeans will continue to taste success and prosperity.

Getting back to Sri Lanka, she gained her independence from the British on 4 February 1948. After 58 years, can the ordinary Sri Lankan sincerely say that he or she is feeling the fruits of independence like the Malaysians have? In your speech dated 17 February 2006, you mentioned that the multi party approach may be the way to go. This approach would have been successful at the onset of the conflict but after almost 50 years of conflict with the Tamils, it would be futile to even contemplate as the many lives lost cannot recoup the lost trust.

With the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, a new South Africa was born. But without President F. W. de Klerks courage to admit that a terrible wrong had been done to the country and the people and more importantly, his foresight to understand and accept that the repugnant past would not be a solution to the ending of the peoples suffering. These 2 mens amazing qualities were recognised when they both awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. South Africa, by the way, will hold the World Cricket Series next year.

Your Excellency, as a leader of the Sinhala people, you can be one of the many Presidents who have led Sri Lanka into turmoil for the past 50 years and maybe in the next 50 years or you can be a courageous Sri Lankan Leader to admit a terrible wrong has been done and have the foresight that peace and prosperity to Sri Lanka will eventuate after granting the Tamils their 2 regions - Jaffna and Trincomalee-Batticaloa. You will have the gratitude and admiration of both Sinhala and Tamil people alike and the respect of the whole world.
