Howard County BoE Student Member Partial Voting Rights

It has come to our attention that the Board of Education of Howard County is considering legislation to give the student member of the board partial voting rights on matters not related to budget or personnel.
For the following reasons, we, the undersigned voting citizens of Howard County, request that the board of education submit legislation to the Howard County delegation in Annapolis by November 29, 2005, that will provide the student member of the board partial voting rights.
A precedent has been set in Maryland. There is currently a voting student member on the following boards of education: Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, Prince Georges County, Montgomery County, and the Maryland State Board of Maryland.
A voting student member will act as a single voice to present a unique perspective on issues that affect students and teachers.
A voting student member of the board will be prohibited from exercising a vote on budget, negative personnel, and boundary issues.
The addition of a voting student member will benefit the Howard County Public School System by more accurately reflecting diversity of thought that the board ought to consider before acting on issues.
