We, the undersigned constituents of the 19th Congressional District, ask you, as our representative, to sponsor a resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
Impeachment proceedings are the specified remedy for the greatest constitutional crisis we have ever experienced. If ignored, its consequences will reach beyond January 2009. President Bushs legacy will be a presidency without limit or accountability, with more unconstitutional executive powers than any president has ever employed and more than the founders would have imagined or allowed. If Congress fails to act before his Presidency ends, the Bush unitary executive legacy will be the precedent by which presidential powers are defined in the future. Our great democracy will become a de facto monarchy.
Since taking office in 2001, the Bush administration has systematically assaulted the Constitution and our basic freedoms, through illegal wiretaps of American citizens, denial of habeas corpus, deceiving Congress to lead us into war, illegal politicization of the Justice Department, using executive privilege to seize our homes and property, commutation of Scooter Libby's jail term to protect the executive branch, and some 800 signing statements denying the Presidents obligation to execute laws passed by Congress.
Impeachment -- not censure -- is the cure for the Constitutional crisis we now face. Further, polls show the majority of Americans support impeachment proceedings.
Therefore, we ask that you uphold your oath to defend the Constitution and initiate an impeachment resolution now for the high crimes and misdemeanors committed by the President and Vice-President.
