In The Spirit of Downtown Winnipeg!
We are currently in the process of creating a petition to save an historic building named Chelsea Courts located at the corner of Assiniboine Avenue at Kennedy Street, Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. We were the the last tenants and were evicted 1 year ago, July 2004 and told that the buildings would be demolished by September 2004. The owners do not want to save them. Fortunately the building was on a hertiage inventory list and had to be approved for demolition. On April 5, 2005 there was a small crowd of us who attended the Winnipeg City Council Meeting on the proposed issue of Demolition versus Heritage Status. We received one Yes vote to keep the building alive as Heritage, In The Spirit of Downtown! It was decided that more information was needed before a final decision is made.We will be going back to City Hall on a future date to be determined and we hope to bring a show of hands from Winnipeg of people who are in favor of saving a wonderful, inspirational building that has graced the same corner since 1914 at the South East Corner of The Manitoba Legislature Building , Winnipeg's only example of a "Maisonette" style building. If you would like to sign our petition or get involved in any way it would be apprieciated. Thank you, Heidi Chater
