Increased accountability of the VCHA

Whereas the VCHA states that integrity is one of their key values, few of us would agree that they serve openly, honestly in a caring and compassionate environment of trust and respect. Lack of communication is a major reason for this failure.
And, whereas, through the Minister of Health Services, the VCHA is accountable to the citizens of this province.
And whereas, the VCHA open board meetings, as they exist at present, serve no purpose as there is little real information being relayed to the public and no decision-making taking place.
Therefore, your petitioners respectfully request that the open board meetings of the Vancouver Coastal Health region actually serve a real function of communication and public input, by VCHA agreeing to the following:
- The VCHA board will actually do business at the open board meetings, not simply give a sanitized PowerPoint presentation to the public.
- The citizens present will be able to raise real issues of concern and have their questions answered even if that means that they need to speak longer than the scheduled two minutes allowed per question.
- Meetings will take place in the evening so that working people can also attend.
- The VCHA will advertise board meetings far ahead of time.
- Meetings will include translation services to ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to participate.
- Respect will be shown to the citizens and stakeholders of the VCHA region by no longer referring to them as consumers.
