We, the 9th/10th graders at the Jewish Academy of Metro Detroit would like to bring up an important issue to you. We feel that academics are a necessity in the life of the child. On the most part, the curriculum at the Academy is excellent. The majority of the teachers are outstanding and do their jobs in the best way possible. However, in the physics department, this is not the case. The 9th grade science teacher, Mrs. Jamieson, is simply not meeting the expectations of a "teacher". She is on what is known as a "power trip". She believes that the class revolves around her. In some aspects, it should be like that. But in the case of Mrs. Jamieson, she takes things way too far. Firstly, the manner in which she tries to send information to us, commonly referred to as "teaching", however this word does not apply in her class, is simply horrible. Instead of teaching at a normal pace, where we, the students, are able to comprehend and take notes, she attempts to teach us in one day what should be taught in a week. She then complains when we have not finished taking notes, while we had been trying to understand, thus not written anything down. Next, Mrs. Jamieson goes against her word. She "promised" us at the beginning of the year that each and every lab report would be do one week after the date of the experiment (exclusions only when there is no school that day). For our most recent lab, conducted from Wednesday through Friday, we only had until Monday to finish the report. Is this fair? Finally, Mrs. Jamieson is what you would call "cold". She comes off as emotionless and as a result, mean. We were told that whenever we needed to go to the bathroom, we would simply take the "pass" (an inner tube...), and go. Now, however, we have been told we are not allowed to go to the bathroom when we are in the middle of what she considers to be "learning". Again, Mrs. Jamieson has gone against her word. We are treated as if we are in Kindergarten; receiving "warning" cards for "bad behavior". Not understanding, and trying to pause class to ask a question, is talking out of turn? Trying to put this in the least offensive way possible, Mrs. Jamieson should pursue a career outside of the teaching field. She is not a person to be around kids, and especially not to try to teach them. While she may be a nice person anywhere else, its what happens in the classroom that matters.
