On June 18 2002, Eddie Ammons Jr. took the life of another person, in order to save his own. Eddie went to this mans house to retrieve a vcr he had let the man hold for $10.00. Eddies uncle went to the mans door to get it, but he wanted Eddie to come in & get it.
He wanted Eddie to give him $30.00 to get the vcr back, Eddie agreed. Then he told Eddie he wanted $60.00. Eddie told him to keep the vcr.
Eddie proceeded to leave & the man grabbed Eddie & snatched the $30.00 out of his hand. They started scuffling. The man told his son (who was also there with a friend) to get a knife. Eddie broke free & ran out the backdoor. The man came out behind him, picked up a board (it had nails in it) from beside the steps & starting hitting Eddie. Eddie was trying to get back to the car. He was blocking the board from hitting him in the head with his arm. Eddie got in the car & was telling his uncle, who was driving, to go, go, go.
The man was beating the car & jabbing inside the car at Eddie. He kept telling the man to stop, to just go on. His uncle started backing the car up (this man still swinging) & Eddie pulled his knife out. He always carried a knife because he was an electrican. The car stalled at the end of the driveway. The man still hitting Eddie through the passenger window (glass broken out) & Eddie reached over with his left hand, (knife was in right hand) to put the car in neutral, because his uncle couldn't crank the car in park. The man lunged to hit Eddie again & got stabbed.
Eddie didn't even know the man was dead until he was arrested. When Eddie & his uncle left the man was still standing & had turned & walked away. He walked approximately 100 & 120 feet & fell on his steps & died.
Eddie was not the aggressor, the man that died was the aggressor. Eddie didn't want to kill that man. He was trying to leave. The mans son testified to that.
At the trial the autopsy determined he had ingested cocaine just before dying. What wasn't told was that he also had a gun in his pocket.
Eddie knows he killed him & he's not denying that. Even though he was denyed the right to protect his self.
As americans we should have a right to protect your self from serious bodily harm or death. Eddie was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter & sentenced between 94-122 months.
This is an injustice because he was trying to avoid trouble & trouble followed.
He stayed in jail until his trial in May 2003. He is currently in prison in Lumberton NC. Since he's been there he has completed D.A.R.T, gotten certified in heating & air, & is currently in carpentry class. He is also a daddy.
What we are asking for is this unjust conviction to be overturned because Eddie was protecting his self.
